The start of the school year always reminds me of when my son, Kian, started kindergarten. He loves socializing, but tends to be cautious in new situations. So making friends the first few months of kindergarten was a journey for him.
We live next door to our elementary school, so every day during recess I would peek through my blinds and watch him, like a psycho. He didn’t talk to anyone and chose to stand in line for solo activities, such as tricycling or the swings. Spoiler alert: He made friends. But then, the only thing I could do was build his confidence and practice positive affirmations.

Bela and Lily is an autobiographical story of my own kindergarten experience. I remember those first few months, learning English and wanting new friends in my new country. So I hope these helpful thoughts help kids like Kian, Bela, Lily, and me.
